Manager feels partnerships between new players will develop with time

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook says his side are a “work in progress” as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Barnsley at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

Reflecting post-match with Latics TV, Cook said:

“I thought it was a fair result; it was two teams that came into the game with a bit of trepidation in relation to results and there was always going to be a little bit of nervousness about it.

“I thought David Marshall was outstanding and Charlie Mulgrew had a great league debut for us defensively but we have got to be better going forwards and we know that.

“For a lot of our lads, the partnerships must be given time to blossom because we have signed new players and we need to give time for them relationships to form.

“It was the first clean sheet of the season, a point, and when you are in the position we are, if we had lost 1-0 late on it would have been the end of the world. Their keeper has made a great save from Dunkley at the end and if we had 1-0 it would have been great.

“The reality for us is that we are a work in progress and we want to work really hard together to try and improve both results and performances, which will see us get to where we want to be.”

Cook continued:

“In a strange way, I am pleased with a point, there is a long way to go and we are only six games in.

“We know we have to improve and we want to improve but we have been in this league before and you have your ups and downs.

“Managing that is important but we must now go into the next away game with more confidence and more belief to affect the game in a positive way and not wait for other teams to beat us.”
