The gaffer delighted with his summer recruits, as Lowe, Sterling, Williams and Gyollai all landed this week.

Speaking to Latics TV ahead of the Sky Bet Championship opener against Cardiff City at the DW Stadium on Saturday 3 August, Latics boss Paul Cook talked about his excitement for the new campaign and his delight to be able to welcome new faces to the club.

"We're delighted to be back, it's a fantastic fixture and we're always excited to have an opening day fixture at home.

"It's a great day for our supporters to be back at the DW Stadium and to get a team with the calibre of Cardiff City and manager in Neil Warnock turning up will make it a great day.

"I used to play with Ronnie Jepson who's on their coaching staff and I've got a lot of respect for Cardiff, their staff and their players.

"Cardiff are a very strong club, they're an outstanding club and I think for any club to dip their toe in the Premier League water and come back into the Championship will always carry a real threat.

"Our home record is good, even in our most turbulent days last season when we were struggling for results, the home record stayed very strong and it's something we're proud of."

On this week's new additions, Cook added:

"We're delighted with the business we've done this week. It's not as easy as supporters think.

"Dujon coming in on loan from Chelsea will give Nathan Byrne real competiton for the right back slot.

"Joe Williams is a very good young player who's had two loan spells at Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers. He's already ready to play regular Championship football. He's a central midfielder with a lot of energy and a really good appetite for the game.

"Jamal Lowe is a player I know very well from my time at Portsmouth after I signed him there. I think our fans will really like Jamal, he's not just a hard working, industrious player, he always carries a lot of talent as well. He has an appetite to work and get into the box to score goals.

"It's massive for me and for us as a club to bring in good characters. We had high last season and a lot of lows, the squad strength got tested and some of the characteristics we want in our team probably weren't there last season. That's not being disrespectful, because the squad last year did fantastically well to get 52 points and achieve what we wanted.

"It created us a platform and hopefully with the signings we've made and hopefully still about to make, then that platform can see us succeed with what we want to do."
