Paul Cook gave an update to the press on how his team might look on Tuesday night when Stoke City visit the DW Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook spoke to the press on Monday morning ahead of Tuesday night’s First Round Carabao Cup clash with Stoke City.

Cook confirmed Joe Gelhardt, Joe Garner and Danny Fox will miss out due to injury and he also added that a number of his new signings are set to feature, with Charlie Mulgrew and Bright Enobakhare set for Latics debuts.

“For our supporters, there is potential for a number of changes on Tuesday night against Stoke,” Cook explained.

“You will see a very strong team on the pitch; a lot of the new lads will feature but within that we will also factor in that we have Leeds, Middlesbrough and QPR coming up quickly – it’s important we manage the players correctly in pursuit of being better.

“For supporters who are thinking of coming or might not be coming, they should know we can’t say it is or isn’t our strongest XI because I don’t think anyone associated with the club can name that at the moment! However, we have a strong team on the pitch, and I think it is fair to say players have an opportunity to play their way in for the upcoming games in the league.

“Joe Gelhardt unfortunately hurt his hamstring in the warm-up on Saturday so he won’t be involved on Tuesday but he will obviously be involved with the first team as the season goes on. Callum Lang and Jensen Weir will be in the squad, although Jensen has just come back off a period of being off for five days unwell.

“Joe Garner has a rib injury so he won’t play on Tuesday, Danny Fox has a back injury which the medical team are confident isn’t going to be as bad as first feared and we hope he will be available for Leeds on Saturday.”
