Speaking to iFollow Latics after his dramatic late equaliser to earn a 2-2 draw against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon, Anthony Pilkington was convinced the goal was his despite Nathan Byrne almost opening his Latics account as the pair slid in to turn the ball home.
"Nath came in at full time and saw he’d been given the goal by some, he’s buzzing in there. I think if he hadn’t run 13 kilometres in the game he may have just got there, or if he had longer legs!
"We get told in training to follow-up from the finishes. Jack Hunt made an unbelievable block on the line but it was a case of following up, and likely I got there first!"
More focused on how important the goal was for the team, Pilkington continued:
"It’s important. We felt like we definitely deserved something from the game, going 1-0 up. We were quite solid first half and comfortable, then they made their subs after an hour and we lost our way a little bit with their change of formation for which rattled us a little bit and they got the two goals but obviously it’s important to get an equaliser in the last minute.
"We’ve ended up having to take a point, but it’s the old saying that if you can’t win the game make sure you don’t lose it. After the first half we had and the chances we had before half-time we definitely deserved something from the game."
Delighted to send Latics' supporters home happier, Pilkington continued:
"It’s good for them. They’ve travelled a long way down here and pay a lot of money to watch us up and down the country. It would’ve been disappointing to send them away, again, having been beaten away but we definitely deserved something from the game.
"We say everyday we’ll concentrate on yourselves. If we take care of our business and get our house in order then we’ll be fine. That’s all we can keeping doing, concentrating on ourselves and have a look where we are at the end of the season."
